GeoGuessr

GeoGuessr is the geography game that defined the drop-and-guess format every street view guesser now copies. Its own FAQ puts the premise in one line: you are dropped somewhere in the world in a street view panorama, and your mission is to find clues and guess your location on the world map. You pan, zoom and walk the road, reading signage, language, vegetation, driving side and architecture, then open the map and drop a pin. What separates it from the free clones is everything built around that loop: an official World map drawing on more than 23 million locations, badges, tournaments, private parties, Creator mode for custom maps and quizzes, apps on iOS and Android, an interface in 11 languages, and a World Championship played on an arena stage, the 2026 edition at the Tempodrom in Berlin. It is run by GeoGuessr AB from Katarinavägen in Stockholm, the same company behind Seterra, an educational geography game with over 400 customizable quizzes.

1. Sign up to play from the landing page, using Continue with Google, Continue with Apple, Continue with Facebook or Continue with Email.
2. Pick a map to play, starting with the official World map that draws on more than 23 million locations.
3. Study the panorama where you land, anywhere from the busy streets of New York to the beautiful beaches of Bali.
4. Pan, zoom and move down the road to gather clues: the language on signage, the driving side, road markings, vegetation and architecture.
5. Open the world map, place your pin on your best estimate and confirm the guess.
6. Compare your pin with the true position, then carry what the reveal taught you into the next drop.

Play it if you want the deep end of the format: an official World map, badges, tournaments, private parties with friends and family, and an esport serious enough to fill an arena in Berlin. Skip it if you want to click and play in ten seconds, because the landing page leads with Sign up to play, and the free tier is labeled Limited: unlimited play, the Daily challenge, ad-free rounds and private parties all sit behind Pro or Elite. One drop and pin is a couple of minutes, a full run fits a coffee break, and the competitive ladder will take the whole evening.

Each round ends when you confirm the pin. The map reveals the true position beside your guess, and the round is scored on the distance between the two: the closer the pin, the higher the score. A miss costs points rather than the run, so a wrong continent returns a weak score and the game moves on to the next drop. Scores accumulate across a game, and the official World map publishes its own average score, which gives an ordinary result to measure yourself against. Competitive matches grade differently again: championship standings rank players by matches won, game differential and total remaining health.

One challenge a day for players who want a single fixed run rather than an open session. The plans page lists it as a Pro and Elite feature.

Creator mode

Build your own maps and quizzes instead of playing the official ones. Pro and Elite both include it, while map collaboration is reserved for Elite.

• Read the road before the signs: driving side, line colors and bollard shapes narrow a country before any place name does.
• Language beats landscape, one legible shop front or road sign usually collapses the search from a continent to a country.
• Move down the road instead of guessing from the drop point, because the next junction often carries the sign the first panorama lacked.
• Zoom the map in before you confirm, since the round is scored on distance and a pin on the right city beats a pin on the right country.
• In tournaments and events, a fast decent pin beats a slow perfect one, because the clock is part of the format.
• Check what your tier includes before planning a long session: unlimited play, the Daily challenge, private parties and ad-free rounds are all listed as Pro and Elite features.
