Spoiler ahead. This page covers the NYT Crossword for Mon, Sep 28. Every answer sits behind tiles you turn yourself, a letter or a word at a time.
Today's NYT Crossword is 15 squares by 15, with 38 across clues and 40 down clues. Theme hints come first, then every answer, then the full grid. New to it? Our NYT Crossword game page covers where to play, the modes and our tips.
The NYT Crossword gets harder through the week: Monday is the gentlest, Saturday the toughest, and the larger Sunday grid plays at about midweek strength. Thursday is where the tricks live, such as several letters squeezed into one square or answers that turn a corner.
A question mark at the end of a clue promises wordplay, and a clue written in the past tense wants an answer in the past tense. When a section stalls, leave it and come back through the crossings of a filled area; three or four letters in place usually give the word away.

How the week climbs, what a theme is, and how clues signal their answers.
A Week of NYT Crossword Grids
The paper plans the week as a climb. Knowing the day tells you how literal the clues will be.
- Monday: The gentlest grid of the week, with plain clues.
- Tuesday: A notch up, with a clear theme.
- Wednesday: Wordplay starts to bite.
- Thursday: Often a trick: several letters in one square, or a rule to crack.
- Friday: Almost always themeless, with long answers and tricky clues.
- Saturday: Almost always themeless, and the hardest of the week.
- Sunday: A bigger 21 by 21 grid, usually themed, pitched at a Wednesday or Thursday.
Theme and Revealer
From Monday to Thursday, and on Sunday, the longest answers share a theme: a pattern, a pun or a hidden word they all have in common.
The revealer is the answer that names the theme, often near the bottom of the grid. Its clue usually points at the theme answers by number.
Three Entries From That Tuesday
- 50A SONGS IN + 52A THE KEY OF LIFEThe revealer, split over two entries: the double album released on 28 September 1976.
- 19A STEVIE WONDER, 21A SIR DUKE, 37A I WISHTheme entries. Each clue names "50/52-Across", so once the album falls, the artist and two of its number one hits follow.
- 57A NATIONThe question mark signals wordplay: a bloc is a group of countries.
Reading the Clues
Most clues tell you what kind of answer they want. Four signals carry a large share of any grid.
A blank to fill
___ algebra
The answer completes the phrase, nothing more.
A question mark
Bloc party?
The clue is a pun. A bloc is a group of countries, so its party is a nation.
A short form
Government agcy. founded to enforce antitrust laws
An abbreviation in the clue asks for an abbreviation in the answer.
A description
Feature of "rendezvous" and "laissez-faire"
The clue describes the answer from outside. Both words end in a letter nobody pronounces.
Four Habits That Finish the Grid
- Start with the blanks. Fill-in-the-blank clues have one answer and give it up fast. Put them in first and let their letters seed the rest.
- Crack the theme. Find the revealer early. Once you know the pattern, every long theme answer gets easier.
- Lean on the crossings. When an answer will not come, read the letters the crossing words already give you. Two known letters settle most three- and four-letter answers.
- Learn the everyday fill. Short words that crosswords love, like ERA, ORE or ALOE, turn up again and again. Once you know them, they fill themselves.
