Strands hands you a grid of letters, six wide and eight tall, and a theme clue that is often a pun. Every letter belongs to exactly one answer, and one of those answers, the spangram, names the theme and stretches from one side of the board to the opposite one. The clue rarely means what it seems to on first read.

When the theme will not click, hunt the spangram: it has to touch two opposite edges, which rules out most paths. Ordinary words of four letters or more still count toward a hint, so a stuck minute is better spent tracing words than staring at the clue.

How to Play NYT Strands

A board of 48 letters, a one-line clue and a set of theme words hidden in it.

Trace the Theme Words

The board has six columns and eight rows, and every letter belongs to exactly one answer. A word links letters that touch, in any direction, diagonals included, and it can turn at every step. The title above the board is the only clue.

One answer, the spangram, names the theme and runs between two opposite sides of the board. Any other real word of four letters or more counts toward a hint: three of them light up one theme word.

Three Moves on That Board

  • FALLEQUINOXSpangram. Two words joined, it drops down the left edge from the top corner and bends across to the bottom row. It names the theme: the day when light and dark trade places.
  • PROGRESSIONTheme word. It starts in the bottom row and climbs the whole right edge to the top corner, eleven letters in one strand.
  • SWITCHTheme word. Six letters packed into the bottom-left corner, doubling back on itself. A word can turn at every letter.

Four Habits That Clear the Board

  • Read the title twice. The clue is often a pun: "Day and night shift" meant the season changing over, with nothing about work hours.
  • Start in the corners. A corner letter touches only three others, so the word running through it is easy to trace.
  • Look for the spangram early. A long run from one edge to the other is worth testing before the short words; it tells you the theme.
  • Spend spare words on hints. When you are stuck, type any real four-letter word you can see. Three of them buy a theme word.
