Spoiler ahead. This page covers the NYT Mini Crossword for Mon, Sep 28. Every answer sits behind tiles you turn yourself, a letter or a word at a time.
Today's NYT Mini is 5 squares by 5, with 5 across clues and 5 down clues. The clues come first, then the grid, so you can check the NYT Mini answers one square at a time. New to it? Our NYT Mini Crossword game page covers where to play, the modes and our tips.
The Mini is a small crossword, usually five squares by five, that most players race against the clock. Its clues lean on pop culture, recent slang and quick wordplay, and one stubborn corner can double a solve that would otherwise take about a minute.
Fill whatever you know at once, across and down, and let the crossings give you the rest. A clue ending in a question mark signals a pun, and an abbreviation in the clue asks for an abbreviated answer.

How the grid numbers itself, how clues signal their answers, and where to start tomorrow.
How the Mini Grid Works
Every white square holds one letter, and every letter belongs to two words at once: one across, one down. Solve one direction and you have half of every word in the other.
A number sits on every square where a word starts. 1 Across and 1 Down often share that first square, which is why solving one gives you the first letter of the other.
Reading Mini Clues
Mini clues are short, and most of them tell you what kind of answer to expect. Four signals cover most grids.
A blank to fill
"Adios ___!"
The answer completes the phrase, nothing more: AMIGO.
Two meanings
What fills the Venn diagram of "Spider-Man" and "the Internet"
One word has to fit both halves of the clue: the thing a spider spins and the thing you browse.
A moment described
Prepare to pop the question
The clue paints the scene rather than defining the word. Before a proposal, you kneel.
A plain definition
Small brass instrument
No trick at all: the clue is a dictionary definition of the answer.
Three Moves on That Grid
- 6A AMIGOThe blank gives itself away, and its five letters seed all five down answers.
- 1A WEBTwo meanings in one clue: the thing a spider spins and the thing you browse.
- 8A KNEELThe clue describes the moment, not the word: before popping the question, you kneel.
Four Habits That Finish the Mini
- Start with the blanks. Fill-in-the-blank clues have one answer and give it up fast. Put them in first and let their letters seed the rest.
- Take the short words first. Three- and four-letter answers have few options. Fill them early and the long answers get easier.
- Lean on the crossings. When an answer will not come, look at the letters the crossing words already give you. Two known letters out of five usually settle it.
- Match the form of the clue. A plural clue wants a plural answer, a past-tense clue a past-tense answer, and an abbreviated clue an abbreviated answer.
