Today's Spelling Bee hive is T C D N O R U, with T in the center, so every accepted word contains T. The full list is worth 198 points, and Genius starts at 139. New to it? Our Spelling Bee game page covers where to play, the modes and our tips.

Spelling Bee gives you seven letters in a honeycomb and asks for as many words as you can make, each at least four letters long and each using the center letter. Letters can repeat, and every hive holds at least one pangram that uses all seven.

Most players stall below Genius because they chase new roots instead of stretching the ones they already found. Once a word lands, try its other forms where the letters allow, then look for the pangram among the longest of them.

Still working on the Spelling Bee today? Start with the grid below. The pangram and the word list stay hidden until you open them.

How to Play NYT Spelling Bee

Seven letters, one of them required, and a word list the editors fix each day.

Build Words From the Hive

Seven letters sit in a honeycomb, one of them in the center. Every word must use the center letter and run at least four letters, and any letter can repeat. Proper nouns, hyphenated words and anything the editors judge too obscure stay off the list.

A four-letter word scores 1 point and longer words score one point per letter. A pangram, a word that uses all seven letters, adds 7.

ONQ
UX
Spelling Bee, 22 September 2026: center N, outer E, I, O, Q, U, X

Three Words on That Hive

  • EQUINOXPangram. It uses all seven letters, so it scores 7 points plus 7: 14.
  • NONUNIONAccepted. Letters can repeat, so four N's count, for 8 points.
  • QUEUERefused. Every letter sits in the hive, but the center N is missing.

Four Habits That Fill the List

  • ✓Pair the center letter. Put the center letter before and after each outer letter and grow words from those two-letter chunks.
  • ✓Stretch what you have. Once a word is in, try what it hides inside a longer one: UNION gave NONUNION on this hive.
  • ✓Hunt the pangram through its rare letters. Build around the hardest letters, a Q or an X, since the pangram has to use them too.
  • ✓Work the grid, not a hunch. The hints grid above counts words by first letter and length. Clear the cells one by one instead of guessing at random.
