How a Round Works
The game shows the song's release year and genre, then plays a few seconds of one instrument. Type a title or skip: each miss or skip adds the next layer, over six tries. On the song in the figure, the sixth try was a written hint rather than an instrument.
Your result is the number of tries you needed. Naming a song from one instrument is rare. By the time the vocals come in, most players have it.

- Start with the rhythm. The first layer is often the beat or the bass. Tap along and ask what tempo and style it suggests before you think of titles.
- Skip rather than guess blind. A skip adds the next instrument just like a miss does. When you have no idea, skip instead of guessing at random.
- Date the sound. Drum sounds, synths and guitar tones date a record fast. Place the decade first and the list of candidates shrinks.
- Listen for the hook. A riff or a bass line you can hum is often enough. Wait for the hook before you spend a guess on a hunch.
