Open with a well-known artist from a big market, since a guess close on debut year and listener rank narrows the field fastest. After that, change one thing at a time: keep the genre and move the decade, or keep the decade and cross a border.

How to Play Spotle
How a guess comes back scored, and how to find the artist in fewer of them.
How a Round Works
Type any artist. The game answers with six tiles, one per attribute, each colored by how close your guess came to the mystery artist. You have ten guesses.
On the debut year and the popularity rank, an arrow shows the way. A down arrow on debut means an earlier year; a down arrow on popularity means a less popular artist, so a bigger rank number.
What the Colors Mean
Green: a match
This attribute is the same as the mystery artist's. Keep it on your next guess.
Yellow: close
Near but not right: a debut year a few years off, or a country close to the answer's.
Red: a miss
This attribute is off. On the year and the rank, the arrow still shows which way to go.
Three Guesses From That Day

- ColdplayMale turns green; four members, Alternative and UK gray. Now it is a man.

Four Habits That Find the Artist Sooner
- Open in the middle. Open with a well-known act from the middle of the range, a 2000s or 2010s debut with a large audience. Its tiles point every way at once.
- Halve the years. Treat the debut arrow like a number game: jump to the middle of the years left, not to the next year along.
- Settle solo or band early. Solo or band settles a lot at once. When the group size is wrong, change it before you chase the genre.
- Let the rank set the fame. A top-100 answer is a household name; a rank in the thousands is a niche act. Let the rank tell you how famous to guess.
