How Letter Boxed Works
A New York Times word game played around the four sides of a square.
Chain words around the square
Twelve letters sit around a square, three to a side. You spell a word by moving from letter to letter, and two letters in a row can never come from the same side. Each new word starts with the last letter of the one before it.
The square is solved when your chain has used all twelve letters. The game sets a target number of words for the day, and the editor's own solution is usually shorter than that target.
Three moves on that square
- H → IAllowed. H sits on the bottom side and I on the top, so the line crosses the square.
- O → IRefused. O and I share the top side, and two letters in a row can never come from the same side.
- HIMSELF → FLOWERPOTChained. The first word ends in F, so the next word has to start with F.
Habits that shorten your chain
- Start from the awkward letters. A square often has one or two letters that few words use. Build a word around them first instead of leaving them for the end.
- Think about where a word ends. The last letter of a word is the first letter of the next. A word that ends on a common opening letter keeps the chain alive.
- Prefer long words that change sides often. Because two letters in a row cannot share a side, long words that zigzag across the square clear the most letters at once.
- Count the letters you have left. Before you commit a word, check which letters stay unused and whether one more word can take them all.
