What is WorldGuessr?
WorldGuessr is a free GeoGuessr alternative built by one independent developer and contributors. It drops you somewhere in the world in real Google Street View, you read the clues the scene offers, the language and the road signs, then place a pin on the map to say where you think you are. A round is worth up to 5,000 points. What sets it apart from the game it answers to is the missing gates: no account for singleplayer, no round limit in any mode, nothing to subscribe to, ads pay for it instead. The map library is unusually deep for a free site, 93 official country maps plus more than 70,000 made by players. The competitive side is not decoration either: ranked 1v1 duels with an ELO rating and leagues, 2v2 team duels, private parties and a shared daily challenge. The full source code is public on GitHub under the PolyForm Noncommercial license.
How to play
- Open worldguessr.com and pick Singleplayer, no account needed, to land in a Street View panorama straight away.
- Pan around the panorama and read the clues before touching the map: the language on display, the road signs.
- Open the map in the corner and drop your pin on your best guess.
- Submit the guess and read the result: your pin, the real spot, the distance between them and your score, up to 5,000 points for the round.
- Keep going, there is no round limit, or swap the world map for one of the 93 country maps or a community map.
- Create a free account when you want ranked 1v1 duels or 2v2, and a saved record of your progress.
Why play WorldGuessr?
For anyone who has hit GeoGuessr's free ceiling and did not want to pay to keep playing, this is the obvious landing spot: every mode, unlimited rounds, nothing to subscribe to. Geography obsessives get the depth too, 93 country maps, tens of thousands of community ones, an ELO ladder and a Hall of Fame. Skip it if you want a tidy once-a-day ritual you can finish and close, because the only capped thing here is the Daily Challenge, three locations at 60 seconds each, done in a few minutes. Everything else is a rabbit hole with no bottom, and that is the point.
Reading the feedback
Grading is by distance. Submit and the result screen shows three things: the pin you dropped, the real spot, and the gap between them, converted into a score of up to 5,000 points for the round. Ranked duels grade you against a person instead of a scale: both players get the same location, the closer guess wins the round and takes health from the other side, and wins raise your ELO rating and push you up the leagues. The Daily Challenge grades once: three locations, 60 seconds each, one attempt, then a score distribution and a top-100 board.
Modes
- Singleplayer
- Unlimited rounds on the world map or any community map, with a time limit or without one, and no account needed to start.
- Ranked Duels (1v1)
- Both players get the same location, the closer guess takes health from the other side, and wins raise an ELO rating and move you up the leagues.
- 2v2 Team Duels

- A match against other players that sits outside the ranked ladder.
- Party

- One shared set of three locations for everyone, every day: 60 seconds a round, a single attempt, then a score distribution and a top-100 board.
- Country Guesser and Continent Guesser
- Two extra guessing modes carried in the same menu as the duels and the daily.
Tips & strategy
- Commit to a hemisphere before details: vegetation and light halve the planet faster than any road sign.
- The scoring curve is brutal past a few hundred kilometres, a confident country-level pin beats a hedge between two continents.
- Singleplayer runs with a time limit or without one: drop the timer while you are still learning to read a scene, put it back when you want duel reflexes.
- Treat the 93 official country maps as a practice range, a run locked to one country trains the details that decide a ranked round.
- In ranked duels both players get the same location and only the closer guess takes health, so beating the person opposite matters more than your absolute score.
- One account covers the website and the Android and iOS apps, so rounds played on a phone still feed the same profile and rating.

Is WorldGuessr really free?
Yes. Every mode, unlimited rounds, nothing to subscribe to. Advertising pays for the site, and there is no paid tier waiting behind the free one.
