Estimatle

Five numerical questions a day, answered by moving a slider rather than typing a figure. You lock in an estimate, then see the real figure, your score and how everyone else guessed.

1. Read the question, then move the slider to your best estimate.
2. Fine-tune with the -10, -1, +1 and +10 buttons, or with the arrow keys.
3. Press LOCK IT IN. The correct answer, your score and the other players' guesses appear, and every answer comes with a source.
4. Repeat for the day's five questions.

Five questions, a slider, and a score that rewards proximity rather than certainty: 100 points a question, one point lost per step you are off. The reveal is the reason to come back - the real figure with its source, and the spread of everyone else's guesses next to yours. Free, and no sign-up: an anonymous account is created the first time you play and keeps your scores and streak on that device, with an optional Google sign-in to carry them across devices. Avoid it if you want the satisfying click of being exactly right, because you will almost never land exactly.

Each question is worth up to 100 points and you lose one point for every step between your estimate and the correct answer, so the score measures how close you landed rather than whether you were right. The spread of other players' guesses is shown alongside the answer.

Core play

A single default daily puzzle: five numerical estimation questions answered by moving a slider and locking in an estimate. After you press LOCK IT IN you see the correct figure (with its source), your score and the spread of other players' guesses.

• Keep nudging with the -10, -1, +1 and +10 buttons or the arrow keys before you lock in: a point goes for every step you are off, so the last few steps still pay.
• Set the units first. The menu switches between metric and US units at any time.
