Sportdle

Sportdle is a directory of daily athlete guessing games with a single streak threaded through all of them. The front page counts nineteen boards and files them by sport: basketball, football, esports, MMA, NFL, hockey, motorsport, tennis and chess. Open one and you do not get a game, you get a mode strip. On the Premier League board, that strip reads CLASSIC, GRID, STAT LINE, CLUE LADDER, TEAM and SILHOUETTE, above a search box and a line reading Guess today's Premier League player.

1. Pick a sport from the directory, then pick a mode from the strip at the top of that board.
2. Type a player into the search box. It only accepts names from its own pool: anything else comes straight back as No results.
3. Read the clue row the guess returns and aim the next one with it.

Nineteen boards is either the appeal or the problem, depending on how you use it. What makes it hold together is that each sport gets modes suited to it rather than one template stamped out nineteen times: the motorsport boards get Circuits and the esports boards stay lean at three modes. If you follow two or three sports at once, this is the one page that keeps a single streak across all of them.

The site describes its own grid plainly: green cells for a match, red cells for a miss, and higher or lower arrows on the numeric columns. On the Premier League Classic board it lists those columns as club, position, height, season context and birth year.

Challenge a friend

A button on each board that lets you choose the athlete a friend has to guess. The site says they receive a link with the answer kept hidden.

• The mode strip is per sport, not global. Tennis, chess and the esports boards carry only Classic, Stat Line and Clue Ladder, while the motorsport boards swap the team modes for Circuits.
• On the Premier League board the site says the pool is current squads and recent regulars, so a long retired great is usually the wrong shape of guess even when the clue row seems to point at him.
• Progress lives in your browser rather than on an account, so a cleared browser takes the streak with it.
