Questle

Questle asks you to name the video game of the day and displays its counter in words above the search field: "GUESS 1 OUT OF 10". The page is dark and sparse, with few elements: a hamburger menu on the left, the title QUESTLE, three counters on the right represented by a flame, a trophy and a controller, all at zero on first visit, and a question mark that opens the rules. Below the header, a button reads "SCREENSHOT HINT UNLOCKS IN 5 GUESSES", and the field labeled "Search for a game..." awaits a title. The rules list seven compared fields: Year, Developer, Rating, Genre, Perspective, Game Mode and Platform. The footer credits IGDB for the data and elovmeister for the implementation.

1. Type a game title into the "Search for a game..." field to submit the first of ten guesses.
2. Read the line returned field by field: year, developer, rating, genre, perspective, game mode and platform.
3. Follow the arrows on Year and Rating, which indicate whether the answer is older or newer, lower or higher rated.
4. Hold out for the visual hint if the clue doesn’t emerge: the blurred screenshot unlocks after five guesses and becomes clear after eight.

Questle has the good sense to state exactly what it compares and, crucially, how much error it tolerates. Five years on Year, five points on Rating, the same console family on Platform: these shown thresholds turn each guess into a measurement rather than intuition. The Perspective field, rare in this type of game, forces you to think of a title by its camera as much as by its genre. And the fact that the screenshot only arrives on the fifth guess keeps the pressure on pure deduction for half the game.

The HOW TO PLAY panel publishes its color code in three lines: green for an exact match, yellow for "close but not exact", gray for an incorrect item. The rules then specify the threshold for each field. Year turns yellow within a five-year range, with a down arrow if the guess is older and an up arrow if it is newer. Developer only has green and gray, with no middle state. Rating turns yellow within a five-point range, also arrowed. Genre, Perspective and Game Mode go green if everything matches and yellow if at least one element matches. Platform is green on the exact same platform and yellow on the same console family, the example given being PS2 versus PS4.

Core play

The site implements a single default puzzle: name the video game of the day using up to ten guesses (the header shows “GUESS 1 OUT OF 10”), read field-by-field feedback, and optionally unlock a blurred screenshot hint after five guesses. There are no alternate modes or additional play variants.

• The Developer column is the only one without yellow: it’s all or nothing. It therefore doesn’t help you inch closer gradually, but it’s extremely valuable when it hits, since it narrows the field to a single catalog.
• A yellow on Platform doesn’t mean “almost” but “same family of consoles.” Seeing yellow on PS2 when the answer runs on PS4 is a true signal of hardware lineage, not a near miss.
• The screenshot clue arrives on the fifth guess and only becomes clear on the eighth, out of ten. Relying on it means playing the last two guesses blind; it’s better to tighten the year and rating ranges first.
• Year and Rating should be read together: each has an arrow and a five-unit tolerance. Two well-spaced guesses are enough to lock the answer into a decade and a rating band.
