What is Anoun?
Anoun's premise is summarized in a sentence shown before the first game: guess the common noun, knowing that wrong guesses reveal what they share with it. The daily grid opens on a full identity card even before the first attempt: the day of the week, the word's type, its length in letters and the guess counter. Types also appear on the list cards: PLACE, THING, BEING and CONCEPT, each card additionally showing the word length as dashes. The site is divided into two columns, DAILY ANOUN on one side with its promise of a grid every twenty-four hours, CUSTOM ANOUN on the other, fed by players and sortable by NEWEST or MOST POPULAR, with a CREATE tab to submit your own.
How to play
- Open the day's grid from PLAY NOW, or choose a community grid in the right-hand column.
- Read the top info card before playing: word type, exact length in letters, number of guesses already used out of twenty.
- Enter a common noun in the input field: the raised info card is topped by the label WILD GUESS even when no attempt has yet been made.
- Use the commonality returned by each wrong guess to narrow the field, and repeat within the limit of twenty attempts.
Why play Anoun?
Anoun reverses the penalty: in most guessing games, being wrong gains you nothing; here the wrong answer is precisely where the information comes from, since the game tells you what it shares with the hidden word. The twenty attempts then take on another meaning; it is no longer a tolerance ceiling but an investigative budget. The rest of the site follows the same measured generosity: the type and the word length are given upfront, and an entire column is left to grids written by players, with a tab to make one.
Reading the feedback
The game's stated principle is that each wrong guess yields something: what that word shares with the solution. Above the input field, a status line permanently shows the date, type, length and attempt counter, and on the list, a row of dashes represents the length of each hidden word.
Modes
- Daily anoun
- The daily grid, announced as renewed every twenty-four hours. Previous days remain listed but locked without an account.
- Custom anoun
- Grids written by players, signed with their pseudonym and sortable by NEWEST or MOST POPULAR. Without an account, the page states one game per day.
- Create
- The tab that allows you to compose your own grid and publish it in the community column.
Tips & strategy
- The top info card gives the type and the length before the first attempt. They are two free filters: spending them mentally costs less than a guess.
- The list cards display the word length as dashes and its type before entering. You can therefore choose a short or long grid depending on how much time you have.
Popular questions
Faut-il un compte pour jouer ?
No for the daily grid and for one community grid per day. Beyond that, the site repeats "Sign in for more": past days appear locked and the streak is only tracked once logged in.
Qui écrit les grilles de la colonne de droite ?
The players. Each card bears the author's pseudonym, the list is sortable by NEWEST or MOST POPULAR, and a CREATE tab allows publishing your own there.
Vingt tentatives, n'est-ce pas beaucoup ?
It is the budget displayed by the game on each grid. It is understood with the announced mechanic: each mistake does not only cost an attempt, it returns a commonality with the solution, so attempts also serve to gather information.
