Ravel

Ravel is the name-guessing engine of guessandmatch.com, presented here for the countries of the world. Each guess is rated on four attributes (Continent, Area level, Last letter, #Words) marked = or ≠, and the color of the name tells you which side of the alphabet to search. A house peculiarity: the egg. If your guess contradicts an already given hint, the game gives you an egg, and the number of eggs tolerated depends on the chosen level.

1. Choose your level via Change difficulty: Practice (level 1), Challenge, or Superpro.
2. Type the first three letters of a country and select it from the list that appears.
3. Compare the four attributes of your guess with those of the hidden country: continent, area level, last letter, number of words.
4. Read the color of the proposed name: red means aim earlier in the alphabet; blue means aim later. Green letters indicate correct initials; grey provides no information.
5. Play again while respecting all previously obtained hints, or you risk collecting an egg, and follow the progress bar that shows how close you are.
6. Continue until the seventh attempt: at that point the country is revealed.

The dual reading grid is what makes Ravel odd and appealing: you think like a geographer about continent and area, then suddenly like a dictionary about the name's alphabetical position. The egg system encourages clean play, and the Practice, Challenge and Superpro tiers turn this safeguard into a genuine difficulty curve.

A dual feedback, semantic and alphabetic. On the semantic side, the four attributes are shown as = or ≠, which rules out entire blocks of countries. On the alphabetic side, the name's color works like hot-and-cold: red to move back toward A, blue to move forward toward Z, with green letters for correct initials and grey for no information. A green flag marks a clean guess, a red flag marks a guess that collected eggs, and an open red envelope signals defeat and reveals the answer.

Practice (level 1)

The entry level: up to seven eggs, i.e. seven ignored hints, are tolerated.

Challenge

Only five eggs are tolerated.

Superpro

No eggs tolerated: each guess must respect all previously given hints.

• The #Words attribute is the most underrated: it instantly separates single-word names from compound names, whereas the continent still leaves dozens of candidates.
• The color is a disguised binary search. Two guesses deliberately far apart in the alphabet bracket the answer faster than any geographical intuition.
• In Superpro, cleanliness takes precedence over speed: a guess that contradicts an already given hint counts as a fault, not just a lost attempt.
