What is Mathler?

Mathler is a daily web math puzzle where you must find a hidden equation that equals a given target number. Build expressions using digits 0-9 and the operators +, -, *, and / across the puzzle’s fixed squares and solve within six guesses. Each guess gives colored-tile feedback to guide you.

How to play

  1. View the target number you must match.
  2. Type a valid equation using digits (0-9) and operators (+, -, *, /) that evaluates to the target and submit it as a guess.
  3. Read the colored-tile feedback: green = correct spot, yellow = in the equation but wrong spot, gray = not in the equation.
  4. Use the feedback, order-of-operations rules, and up to six guesses to converge on the hidden equation.

Why play Mathler?

Mathler provides a quick daily math challenge that rewards deduction and strategy. With color-coded feedback and multiple difficulty levels (including unlimited practice and an archive of past puzzles), it’s designed as a short brain-boosting puzzle that encourages testing operator combinations and order-of-operations thinking.

Reading the feedback

After each submitted guess the game colors each tile: green means that character is in the correct spot; yellow means the character appears elsewhere in the solution; gray means the character is not in the equation. The game also accepts commutative solutions and will automatically rearrange them to match the exact solution.

Tips & strategy

  • Open with a guess that mixes different digits and operators to reveal more information from your first attempt.
  • Remember order of operations: * and / calculate before + and -, which affects how expressions evaluate.
  • Treat gray tiles as eliminations. Use them aggressively to narrow digit/operator possibilities.

Popular questions

What characters can I use?

You may use digits 0-9 and the operators +, -, *, and /. On Easy there is one operator per puzzle; Normal uses +, -, *, and /.

Are commutative equations accepted?

Yes. Commutative solutions (for example 20+7+3 and 3+7+20) are accepted and will be automatically rearranged to match the exact solution.
