Moviedle

The Moviedle on thingdle.app starts from a written riddle, a few enigmatic words set as an epigraph, then runs your guesses through a four-column table: year, world, genre and locations. The address thingdle.app/moviedle redirects to a localized version, here /en/moviedle, and the day's game is numbered.

1. Read the riddle displayed at the top of the page.
2. Type any film title into the search field and submit.
3. Read the four columns of the table: Year, World, Genre and Location.
4. Keep going: the attempt counter goes up to six, and two additional hints unlock along the way.
5. A solved game is added to the movieDEX, with the badges earned.

The opening riddle is written like a line of poetry, dry images that name nothing. It's a much more literary starting point than pure deduction games, and the four-column table then takes over to prevent the riddle from being just a matter of chance.

Each guess returns four colored verdicts: green signals a match, orange a partial match, gray an absence of match. The year indicates whether the sought decade is earlier or later than that of your film, the world distinguishes real, animated and other, and the genre and locations simply indicate whether there is overlap. The table starts with five question marks as the blank row.

• Any title makes a good probe: the four columns tell you about the decade, the world, the genre and the locations, even when the guess has nothing to do with the riddle.
• Orange is worth its weight in gold: on genre or locations, it signals a partial overlap, so it's a lead to pursue rather than abandon.
• Badges reward a quick solution or one without hints; if you're aiming to collect them, it's better to try one more guess than to open a hint.
