heardle.info is less a game than an index: the page stacks dozens of variations on the same premise: an intro to identify. There is the song of the day, an entry per decade from the 1940s to the 2020s, sections by genre (soul, rock, rap, metal, disco, k-pop, country, Motown, musicals, TV theme tunes...), artist pages, country variants, and a duplicate labeled Unlimited covering the nine decades and only three genres, Rap, Rock and Pop, alongside an entry Heardle: Unlimited Game. The rule is the same everywhere: you listen to an intro, you look up artist and title in a list, six chances.

1. Choose a variant on the homepage: the Heardle of the day, a decade, a genre, an artist, or a country.
2. Listen to the offered intro, then search for the artist and the title in the list.
3. Skipping a turn or guessing wrong lengthens the clip; the stated goal is to answer in as few attempts as possible.

The appeal of heardle.info is not the song of the day but the breadth of the index: depending on whether you open the Motown page, the TV theme tunes page, or a single-artist page, you're calling on a completely different kind of memory. It's a library of intro-guessing games rather than a single game, to open depending on what you feel like testing at home.

The only feedback is the clip length. The instructions say as much: a skipped or failed attempt unlocks more of the intro. The site's FAQ even contradicts itself on this point, one answer saying the clip is shortened, the next saying it is lengthened. The rules given here are those published on the site.

• Decade and artist pages narrow the list of possible answers even before the first listen. All else equal, they demand less memory than the general entry.
• The list expects the artist and the title. When the voice is more identifiable than the melody, typing the artist's name returns the correct track faster than searching for the title.
• The homepage is long and groups its entries into blocks (countries, decades, genres, artists): spotting your block before scrolling avoids wasting time looking for a specific variant.
