Songless

Songless plays you a fragment of a song and asks you to name it, starting from a snippet so short it barely registers as music, a tenth of a second. You get six tries per board, and every wrong guess or skip unlocks a longer stretch of the same track. Three tabs run separate boards: All, Rock and Hip Hop.

1. Press the green play button. The first snippet is the 0.1 seconds the timeline names.
2. Type into "Search a song" and pick a result.
3. A wrong guess fills the next row and unlocks more audio. Skip advances the audio the same way without naming a track.

Six rows and an opening fragment of a tenth of a second, so the game suits listeners who know records rather than choruses: the first snippet rewards recognising a snare sound or a sample, and half-remembered humming gets you nowhere against a search box. Signing in is optional and buys stats and custom games. The catch is the back catalogue: past dates sit behind a Lessgames subscription, so a day you skip is only recoverable if you pay for it.

Six rows sit under the tabs and fill one at a time as you guess or skip. Above the play button, a segmented bar shows the unlock steps at their true relative widths and the marker labels how many seconds you have earned, so the later segments visibly dwarf the first ones.

• At a tenth of a second you are not hearing a melody, you are hearing a production signature: the attack of a drum machine, tape hiss, a particular reverb tail. Placing the era or the studio sound is the only workable first move.
• The genre tabs are the easier boards, not the harder ones. Rock and Hip Hop cut the candidate pool to one style, so a listener who knows that style has far fewer plausible answers to sort through than in All.
• If you care about catching up, check the subscription price before you start a streak. The daily is free, the archive is not.
