A book cover is displayed with a large black rectangle placed in the middle. Only the edges remain: the colors, what extends beyond the typography, the printed notes on the margins. The answer is chosen from a list of books, and the entries stack in lines beneath the field.

1. Examine what the mask leaves visible: colors, illustration style, printed text on the edges, award stickers.
2. Search for the title in the dropdown field labeled “Search for a book...”.
3. Confirm with GUESS: the entry is recorded on one of the stacked lines beneath the field.

The whole game rests on a graphic designer’s idea: a cover is much more than its title. Once the center is masked, what remains is a palette, a layout, marginal notes, and you discover how these signals suffice to recognize a book you have held. The closed list prevents blind guessing and turns the round into an exercise in visual recognition.

The lines placed beneath the field fill one per entry. The black mask and the list of attempts are the only elements on the screen: everything plays out on the visible margin of the cover.

Core play

The site presents a single default puzzle per page: a book cover masked by a central black rectangle, a closed dropdown (“Search for a book...”) whose entries must be chosen, a GUESS confirmation, and stacked lines recording each submitted entry. There are no alternate modes or gameplay variants on the page.

• The search list is closed: if a book is not listed, the site invites you to send it by email rather than attempting free-form entry. There is no point in insisting on a title absent from the catalog.
• The mask covers only the center: anything printed in the margins remains readable. It is those publishing details, more than the illustration, that ultimately identify a book you have held.
