Football Wordle

Football Wordle applies the letter-by-letter mechanic to a footballer's name: six guesses, an on-screen keyboard, and a mystery player drawn from the five big European leagues: Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1. The length of the name changes from day to day, removing the usual support of five fixed tiles, and each guess must itself be a player from those leagues.

1. Open footballwordle.com: the day's grid appears with as many columns as there are letters in the target name.
2. Type a player's name using the on-screen keyboard; DELETE is used to correct.
3. Submit with ENTER: the guess must be a player from the five big leagues.
4. Read the tile colors to deduce which letters are present and their positions.
5. After three guesses, claim the hint offered by the game, which reveals a letter.
6. Share your result once you've found the player, via the "Send to a friend" button.

Guessing a word and guessing a proper name do not mobilize the same memory: here, orange letters trigger a list of surnames rather than a dictionary, and the variable name length prevents the reflexes learned on five-tile grids. The constraint of requiring only real players from the five big leagues does the rest: each guess is already a bet on football culture before it is a bet on letters.

Three states, without ambiguity: a green tile signals a correctly placed letter, an orange tile a letter present in the name but elsewhere, and a dark tile a letter absent. The welcome panel illustrates the three cases on example names rather than with abstract explanations. The game adds a safety valve that few of its cousins offer: after three guesses, a hint reveals a letter of the name.

Club Editions

The Football Wordle menu also offers grids restricted to a club, Man Utd, Man City and Liverpool FC.

• A guess must be a player from the five big leagues: you can't burn a guess with a filler word full of vowels, so choose a real name that covers many common letters.
• The length of the name changes each day and is given to you before you start: it's the first filter to apply, even before thinking about letters.
• The hint only unlocks after three guesses: if you're torn between two possibilities after two tries, a third try, even imperfect, will open up a free letter.
