What is Estimania?
Estimania is a free daily estimation game. It asks five numerical questions across subjects such as science, geography, history and sport, rewarding a sensible order of magnitude rather than pure recall.
How to play
- Open the day’s puzzle and read a numerical question.
- Enter your best estimate.
- Complete all five questions, then read the total out of 500 and the leaderboard position.
Why play Estimania?
It is for curious players who enjoy making a defensible estimate and learning whether their intuition was off by a little or by an order of magnitude.
Reading the feedback
Each answer scores from 0 to 100 on a logarithmic scale. A perfect estimate scores 100; an answer that is ten times too high or too low scores zero. Proportional errors are treated symmetrically.
Modes
- Daily puzzle
- Five questions released at midnight UTC; a completed daily puzzle locks after one play.
Tips & strategy
- Aim for the right scale before worrying about exactness, because the score is logarithmic.
- When a question is a Fermi problem, break it into smaller quantities you can estimate instead of searching for a memorized fact.
