What is Anagardens?

Anagardens grows a word from the previous one. The instructions, permanently shown in the right column, state the rule in two sentences: form a word that matches the clue using all the letters shown plus the blue “?” tile, then repeat with that word augmented by a new blue tile. The site itself illustrates the mechanic: AD plus “?” with the clue “Down” gives SAD, then SAD plus “?” with the clue “Sprint” gives DASH. On screen, the level clue sits above empty boxes, the tile bank is placed just below, and three buttons accompany it: Clear, Shuffle and Show letter, adorned with a caterpillar. Each puzzle is numbered and carries its date in the header.

How to play

  1. Read the clue shown above the empty boxes: it describes the word to form, not a dictionary definition.
  2. Click the tiles in the bank to place them in the boxes, the blue “?” tile supplying the letter that wasn’t present at the previous level.
  3. Use Shuffle to reshuffle the bank or Clear to start over, and Show letter when a level is stuck.
  4. Continue: the validated word becomes the raw material for the next level, augmented by a new blue tile.

Why play Anagardens?

Anagardens fixes the little wastefulness of anagram games: usually, a solved grid is a discarded grid. Here, the answer found becomes the next clue, augmented by a single letter, so the puzzle grows letter by letter like a plant from which nothing is cut. The caterpillar on the help button and the game's name are not mere decoration: the principle itself is that of a sprout. And because everything is linked, a failed level doesn't cost a point, it costs the continuation.

Reading the feedback

The feedback comes from the interaction: a clicked tile leaves the bank, where it stays shown in pale gray, and occupies the first empty box under the clue. The number of boxes indicates the expected word length.

Modes

Core play
The on‑screen instructions (permanently shown in the right column) require forming a word that matches the clue using all the letters shown plus the blue ? tile; when that word is validated it becomes the raw material for the next level, augmented by a new blue tile so the word length increases by one each step. The UI places the level clue above empty boxes, the tile bank beneath, and three buttons labeled Clear, Shuffle and Show letter.

Tips & strategy

  • Shuffle is not a decorative button. Since each level is a complete anagram of the available letters, changing their order on screen breaks the distracting reading you had in mind.
  • Show letter exists because the progression is linked: the letters from one level all carry over to the next, so being stuck low prevents seeing what’s above.

Popular questions

What is the blue “?” tile for?

It carries the new letter for the level. The word to find takes all the letters of the previous answer and adds the one from the blue tile, which lengthens the word by one at each step.
