Vexle

Vexle inverts the flag quiz. You are told the country and handed a blank canvas, and you have to draw its flag from memory before revealing the real one next to yours with a percentage match. The drawing kit is a proper little paint app: brush, fill bucket, eraser, rectangle, circle, line and star tools, a palette of preset flag colours plus a rainbow swatch for any custom shade, a size control and undo and redo.

1. Read the country named above the canvas under the daily draw number.
2. Draw the flag. Lay in the field with the fill bucket, use the shape tools for bands and stars, and open the rainbow swatch when a country's blue is not one of the presets.
3. Press reveal and compare to see your drawing beside the real flag with your percentage match.

Recognising a flag and reproducing one are completely different things, and Vexle is the game that proves how thin your knowledge actually is. You will get the colours of a flag you have seen a thousand times and then freeze on which side the canton goes, or how many stripes there really are. Because the scoring rewards the large regions rather than the fiddly emblem, it stays a memory test rather than an art test, and the percentage match gives you a number to chase the next time that country comes round. It runs in nine languages and has a section aimed at teachers.

A percentage match, scored so that the big colour regions carry the weight and fine detail counts for very little. Hit 90% or better and the page throws confetti at you. Coming back the next day is what builds the streak.

Limited time event

A banner above the tabs ran a regional flag pack against a countdown, with a fixed set to complete before it expires.

• Score comes from the big colour regions, so build the flag outward: field first, then the main bands, then the charge. The coat of arms in the middle is worth almost nothing against a field you got the wrong shade of.
• Learn the shortcuts before you draw anything: B for brush, F for fill, E for eraser, R C T L S for the shapes, square brackets to resize and Ctrl and Z to undo.
• The preset palette covers common flag colours, but plenty of countries use a specific navy or green. The rainbow swatch opens a full picker, and colour is exactly what the scoring is looking at.
