What is Bevel?
A passage of literature to read, then four questions about that single text: who wrote it, in which decade, of what nationality, and from which book it comes. Five attempts, and one hint that unlocks after each mistake, according to the instruction shown at the top. Each passage states its length in words and an estimated reading time, and the puzzle is numbered.
How to play
- Read the passage of the day. The header gives its word count and an estimated reading time before you begin.
- Fill in the four fields: author, decade, nationality, title. The lists show a short selection, but you can type to search the entire catalog of authors and works.
- Submit with "Submit guess". The banner shows the current attempt and warns how many fields are left empty.
- Read the colors, take the hint unlocked by the mistake, and try again on what remains.
Why play Bevel?
Bevel asks what no word game asks: actually read, and listen to a voice. The decade and the nationality turn an intuition of style into a partially correct answer, which rewards the ear before encyclopedic knowledge. And because the four fields illuminate one another, a good deduction about the era often counts for more than an author name thrown at random.
Reading the feedback
Green for correct, gray for wrong, and a yellow that applies to only two of the four fields: the decade, within ten years, and the nationality, when you hit the same literary tradition. The author and the title use only green and gray. In other words, the two fuzzier fields are the only ones that accept approximation, and that's where progression from one attempt to the next is decided.
Modes
- Today
- The day's grid, numbered and dated at the top of the page. This is the landing screen.
- Cold Read
- A "TRY COLD READ" link placed under the title.
Tips & strategy
- The interface warns that an attempt starts even with empty fields, and that it still counts: filling all four boxes before submitting is basic hygiene.
- Since decade and nationality are the only fields to grant a "close" result, they are what a failed attempt still returns information on.
- The four fields respond to each other: locking the decade mechanically narrows the list of plausible titles.
