What is Gerrymandle?

Gerrymandle hands you a hexagonal map where coloured houses stand for voters and asks you to group the tiles into districts so that your party wins more districts than anyone else. Every district must be one connected shape and all of them hold the same number of houses, so the only lever you have is where the lines go: the packing and cracking that real map-drawers use. One invented board is published every day at local midnight, and everybody in the world gets the same one.

How to play

  1. Read the brief above the board. It names your party and states the day's shape, for example 'Win the election for red. Draw 5 districts of 3 populated tiles.'
  2. Click adjacent hexes to group them into a district. Empty tiles carry no voters but can be used to bridge distant houses into one connected shape.
  3. Redraw freely: Reset clears the board, and there is a Hint button if you get stuck.
  4. Press Submit when you think you have found the best distribution. There is one submission a day, so check the DISTRICTS bar first.

Why play Gerrymandle?

Gerrymandle is a civics lesson wearing the clothes of a packing puzzle, and the mechanic is the argument: cracking your opponents apart for a few minutes leaves you able to read a real congressional map and see what was done to it. It suits people who like combinatorial shape puzzles and anyone teaching redistricting, and it suits impatient players badly - the daily takes one submission and there is no second try. If you want the subject without the daily stakes, the Real maps section and the free archive of past boards are there whenever you want them.

Reading the feedback

The board answers continuously while you draw. The VOTERS bar shows the whole-map split between the parties, and the DISTRICTS bar fills with the colour of whoever currently wins each completed district, so you watch a district flip as you drag one more house into it. A district where two parties tie is won by nobody, and every house has to sit inside a district, all of them the same size, before the board will take your answer. Submitting ends the day, and the game counts the hints you spent getting there.

Tips & strategy

  • Count before you draw. The brief states exactly how many houses each district holds, so dividing your party's total by that number gives the maximum number of districts you could ever win.
  • Pack, then crack. Dump the opponent's surplus into one district they take by a landslide, then spread your own houses so you win the rest by the thinnest legal margin.
  • On three-party boards, aim two rivals into the same district. A tie wins it for nobody, which denies a seat as effectively as winning it yourself.

Popular questions

Do the empty tiles count for anything?

Only houses vote. Empty land exists to connect houses into one connected shape, and every house on the board has to end up inside some district before you can submit.
