What is Jigsy?

Jigsy is a packing puzzle: a square grid on one side, colored pieces scattered around, and everything has to fit. Two things stand out as soon as you enter the game. The grid contains grey blocked cells that no piece will occupy, and two round controls appear under the selected piece, labeled ROTATE (R) and SCALE (S).

How to play

  1. Open jigsy.app/daily. The landing page shows the day's average time, a PLAY button, a link to yesterday's solution and an “On this day” note unrelated to the grid.
  2. Press PLAY: the game appears immediately, the timer at zero in the top-left, a Moves counter beside it, and the current date in the center.
  3. Look at the grid in the middle of the screen. It is five by five, and the grey cells outlined with a thicker stroke are blocked.
  4. Locate the pieces placed around the grid: bars, squares, L-shapes, stair-step pieces, each different in shape and size.
  5. Select a piece and use the two round buttons that appear beneath it: ROTATE, shortcut R, and SCALE, shortcut S.
  6. Drag pieces onto the grid until everything is fitted, while the timer runs.

Why play Jigsy?

Because the day's grid is not a solid rectangle: a few cells are blocked from the start, and you must fit seven pieces of unequal sizes into what remains. Alongside the usual ROTATE, the controls show a second button labeled SCALE, which is rare in the genre. The label alone is enough to intrigue. And the whole thing is played in a handful of minutes, with a timer and move counter to hand and the day's average time displayed before you start.

Reading the feedback

Jigsy doesn't grade you, it measures. The top banner consists of three elements: a timer that starts as soon as the game begins, a move counter and the current date, and that's all the game gives you while you play. The grid communicates by contrast: playable cells are white, blocked cells are grey and outlined with a thicker stroke: impossible to mistake once you've seen them. The only point of comparison appears before the game, on the landing page, with the day's average time.

Modes

Classic
This is the name given to the daily grid, both in the page title ("Jigsy Classic - Puzzle") and in the local key that stores the day's average time. There are no other modes.

Tips & strategy

  • Both controls display their keyboard shortcut next to their label, ROTATE (R) and SCALE (S): so you can avoid aiming for the round dots with the mouse while the timer runs.
  • Count the actually free cells before placing your largest piece: the blocked ones take some of the twenty-five out of play.
  • The day's average time is displayed before you start: a glance is enough to tell whether today's grid is a formality or a long evening.

Popular questions

No. The game starts without signing in, the browser only keeping a local player identifier.
