What is HoopGrids?
HoopGrids is the daily NBA grid: nine cells at the crossings of career criteria, one player per cell. The puzzle mixes era, stat and volume conditions (Played in the 2000s, 1+ Steals per Game in a season, 10,000+ Career Points, for example), and the search box announces how many players qualify for the selected cell, so the answer pools are wide and the skill is picking from them. A Rarity score tracks how obscure your answers are, and the format has grown past its original constraint: the site now advertises unlimited guesses for every square with realtime rarity.
How to play
- Open the day's grid: three row criteria × three column criteria, nine intersections to fill.
- Tap a cell and type into the search. It tells you how many players qualify.
- Pick a player who satisfies both the row and the column condition; rarer picks improve your Rarity score.
- Switch mode if you like (Normal, Hint, or Reverse), and check the Archive or Speedrun for more than one grid a day.
Why play HoopGrids?
Because rarity scoring turns a trivia quiz into a flex: naming LeBron fills the cell, but naming the forgotten journeyman who also qualifies is what the leaderboard respects. Around the daily grid sits a full practice ecosystem: an Archive of past grids, a Speedrun mode, three ways to play the same puzzle (Normal, Hint, and a new Reverse mode), friends and leaderboard features, and NFL and MLB sister games one click away.
Reading the feedback
A valid player locks into the cell; the interesting number is the rarity attached to each answer, computed in real time from what other players picked. The header keeps your running Rarity score, starting at 0.00. Lower-picked answers score better, so the game grades originality, not just correctness. Stats and a leaderboard track the habit across days.
Modes

- NFL & MLB HoopGrids
- Sister grids for football and baseball, linked from the menu.
Tips & strategy
- Read all nine cells before answering one: a star who fits three cells is wasted on the cell a role player could fill.
- Rarity is the real game, train yourself to reach past the first name that qualifies to the fifth.
- The season/career split matters: 1+ steals per game in a season is a much wider net than a career average, and the pool counter proves it.
Popular questions
How many guesses do I get?
The site now advertises unlimited guesses for every square. The constraint has moved from guess budget to rarity score.
What is the Rarity score?
A realtime measure of how uncommon your answers are among all players; obscure correct picks score better than famous ones, and your total sits in the header.
Can I play more than one grid a day?
Yes, an Archive of past grids and a Speedrun mode sit next to the daily, plus NFL and MLB versions of the game.
Do I need an account?
No to play; a sign-in exists for stats, friends and leaderboard features.
