ClueCrush lines up sixteen words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four based on a hidden connection, with a limited margin for error. Around this numbered grid, the site has piled on a lot: an archive, a grid creator open to players, themed collections signed by their authors and highlighted as Staff Picks, a Timed Mode button placed above the board, a random-puzzle button, and a Pro subscription.

1. Close the two windows that open on the grid when you arrive: the seven-step tutorial and the email signup panel.
2. Tap four words that you think are linked by the same idea.
3. Confirm with Submit: the help panel says it checks whether the four words form a group.
4. Repeat until all four groups are found, watching the counter for remaining mistakes.
5. Use Shuffle to reshuffle the words and Deselect to clear a selection made by mistake.

ClueCrush's board is classic, but the site around it is not: an archive of more than six hundred grids available on the free plan, a grid creator, themed collections of eight grids signed by their authors and highlighted each week. In other words, the daily puzzle is only an entry point, and a good session doesn't have to stop after four groups.

Two counters frame the board: groups found out of four, and the mistakes you have left. The game's two sources disagree on the allowance: the How to Play panel announces four mistakes, while the board displays “Mistakes remaining: 3”. The controls Shuffle, Deselect and Color complete the interface, with a discussion thread open beneath the grid.

• The themed collections let you play eight grids in a row around the same subject when the daily grid has already been played.
