What is One Shot?
One Shot flips the five-letter grid mechanic: instead of starting from a blank page, you receive clue rows already filled in and already colored, and you must find the single five-letter word compatible with all of them. Three puzzles per day, Easy, Medium and Hard, each tied to an Elo ranking that rises and falls depending on your answers.
How to play
- Choose a tier in the Easy / Medium / Hard banner: the official panel specifies that you must solve Easy to unlock Medium, and Medium to unlock Hard.
- Read the clue rows already placed: green for a correctly placed letter, orange for a letter present elsewhere, grey for an absent letter.
- Type the word you deduce into the empty row using the virtual keyboard, then submit with ENTER.
- If stuck, open the extra-hint button, which displays its cost and the new reward before you click.
Why play One Shot?
One Shot isn't a race to the stingiest guess: the clues are given up front, and the only question is whether you can read a constraint. The Elo ranking puts a price on impatience, since an approximate attempt costs points where a clean deduction earns them, and the hint market lets you buy comfort knowing exactly what you lose.
Reading the feedback
Feedback is immediate and quantified. A wrong answer triggers a red banner: "'LATEU' is incorrect (-5 ELO). Keep trying!". The letters from the clue rows carry over to the virtual keyboard, which shows in green, orange or greyed out what each key already indicates.
Modes
- Easy, Medium, Hard
- Three daily puzzles, unlocked in sequence. The open tier shows its reward, "Reward: +14 ELO" under Easy, and the top banner displays your current ranking.
- Calendar archive
- A monthly calendar marks days won, lost and available, and reopens past dates. The midnight rule still applies: an archive puzzle opened today must be finished today.
Tips & strategy
- The virtual keyboard is already colored from the clue rows: treat it as your list of eliminated letters rather than rereading the lines one by one.
- The hint button shows both its cost and the recalculated reward it will leave you: compare the two amounts before clicking, they move together.
- Don't open a tier you don't intend to finish: the official panel indicates that a puzzle opened and left unfinished after midnight is counted as a loss.
Popular questions
What happens if I leave a One Shot puzzle in progress?
The How to Play panel is explicit: a daily puzzle opened and then left unfinished past midnight is automatically counted as a loss. The same rule applies to archive puzzles, using the midnight of the day you open them.
How much does a wrong answer cost?
Five ranking points. The official panel announces it and the error banner confirms it on screen: an incorrect guess removes 5 Elo and lets you continue searching.
Are my statistics stored on a server?
No. The About panel states that progress and statistics are stored client-side in the browser, without third-party tracking cookies, and offers a JSON export and import for backups to move between devices.
