What is Phrazle?
Phrazle stretches the guessing grid across a phrase. Each row holds several words separated by gaps, every guess must fill all of them with valid words, and you get six attempts. What makes it its own game is a fourth colour the single-word formats have no use for: green for the right letter in the right spot, orange for the right letter elsewhere in the same word, grey for absent, and purple for a letter that is in the phrase but sitting in the wrong word entirely.
How to play
- Read the shape of the row first, the gaps tell you how many words there are and how long each one is.
- Fill every slot with valid words; a partial phrase will not submit.
- Read the four colours, and treat purple as the important one: that letter belongs to a different word in the same phrase.
- Rebuild the phrase across six attempts, using the Hint key on the keyboard if a word refuses to come.
Why play Phrazle?
Purple is the whole design. In a one-word game a letter is either in or out; here it can be in the phrase but in the wrong place at a scale that matters, which means information travels sideways between words. A purple in word one tells you something concrete about words two and three, and learning to route that information is a genuinely different skill from narrowing a single five-letter slot. The phrases are idioms and common expressions, so the endgame often flips from letter deduction to simply recognising the saying.
Reading the feedback
Four states rather than three, illustrated in the help panel on the phrase HOT HAND: green when the letter sits in the right word and the right spot, orange when it belongs to that word but elsewhere, purple when it belongs to the phrase but to a different word, and grey when it is absent altogether. A Hint key sits on the keyboard itself, in the row beside the letters.

Tips & strategy
- Spend the first guess on letter coverage across all the words at once, a phrase gives you far more slots than a single word, so a wide opener returns more information here than anywhere else.
- Purple is a routing instruction, not a rejection. It says the letter survives, so move it to another word rather than dropping it.
- Once two words are green, stop solving letters and start guessing the expression. Phrases are idioms, and recognising the saying beats deducing its last seven characters.
Popular questions
What does the purple tile mean?
