Rebusly

Rebusly is a daily rebus drawn from the day's news. The rules panel states the principle in one sentence: the answer is not in what you see, it is in its position, its size, its quantity or its sound. A word that falls outside the frame is not read; it is described. Each grid is numbered, dated, stamped with a newspaper section that changes according to the day of the week, and the enumeration in parentheses shows the number of letters in each word of the answer. Once solved, the rebus leads to four selected articles about the story it referenced.

1. Press "Let's Play": the timer starts and the rebus appears, with the enumeration of the answer in parentheses.
2. Interpret the visual by its arrangement, size, quantity or sound rather than by the words it contains.
3. Type the phrase using the on‑screen keyboard and then confirm with Submit; Clear erases the current entry.
4. If you're stuck, take the hints in the imposed order: News gives the context of the story, Decode explains how to read the visual, Letters gives the first letter of each word.
5. As a last resort, Reveal ends the grid and displays the answer.
6. Once solved, move on to reading: four selected articles cover the day's story.

The rebus is an old genre, and Rebusly gives it a reason to exist today: the day's solution is an expression that current events have put into circulation, which makes the game as much a test of what you've read as of your reading of images. The rule of three attempts shared with the hints gives the round real stakes, because asking for help is to forfeit an attempt. And the site's inverted promise (a game that serves as a gateway to reading, rather than a newspaper that serves as a gateway to a game), is borne out on the end screen, where four articles await the solver.

The budget is unique and shared: three attempts, in which each hint taken counts the same as a wrong answer. Three dots aligned under the label HINTS show what remains, and a timer runs at the top of the grid from the moment it opens. It's an unusually strict setup for an association game, where the temptation to try an approximate phrasing is strong.

• Taking a hint isn't free: it consumes an attempt. Out of three, a player who asks for two hints has only one answer left.

• The day's newspaper section is displayed above the rebus and changes according to the day of the week: it narrows the field even before the first glance at the visual.
• Look for a verb of position or movement rather than a synonym: the stated principle is that meaning comes from the layout, not the vocabulary.
